Ancient Excavated Islamic Period Translucent Blue Glass Beads, Strand, Mali - AG111bAncient Excavated Islamic Period Translucent Blue Glass Beads, Strand, Mali  - AG111b$300.00Ancient Excavated Islamic Period Translucent Blue Glass Beads, Strand, Mali - Rita Okrent Collection (AG111b) These very special ancient excavated blue Islamic beads are found in Mauritania and Mali, specifically in the caravan towns of Timbuktu, Mopti, Djenne and Gao. They vary in design and wear, patina and iridescence, and are somewhere in between 600-1000 years old (or more). They have been buried for hundreds of years and may have once had eyes on them, or perhaps were made to be worn with eye beads. Blue is generally used traditionally for protection by Islamic and African societies and people, with or without the eye. Round bead sizes range from 12-16mm each. 54 beads on the strand. 12 are oval, 42 are round. 28" of beads. They make lovely beads for any collector, or for design in earrings or necklaces. Various sizes and shapes including short tubular agates, and large focal agates and crystals. 6 large focal sized beads (sizes range from 23-25mm, hole-to-hole). Many useful medium sized beads (sizes range around 15mm hole-to-hole). 27" strand. These are super special collector's beads. Each one is is a work of art, they are handcrafted by Mauritanian silversmiths for traditional bridal jewelry. Fabulous for designing and very solidly made. Wonderful addition to add elegance to earrings or any other creation. Range from 16.7-19.7mm (.6-.8 of an inch) in length. 6.5-8mm (.33 inch) at widest point. Nicely matched and in good overall condition with wear from age. 27mm (1.06 inches) long and 19mm wide (.73 inch). These hollow beads are created from using a silver sheet and made into two halves which are joined together to make the hollow beads. These hair ornaments come from the Tukolor peoples of Senegal and Mauritania. They are collectible, authentic and very special. Circa early to mid 1900's. These pendants have dents and wear. This lovely brass/bronze and silver amulet measures 2" tall and and 1." at narrowest width. 1930's or earlier. Used to hold a Koranic or protective verse. The Tcherot are talismans, worn by the Tuareg in the Sahara and by other Berber people in the extreme south of Morocco, Western Sahara and Mauritania. They are believed to bring luck and drive away evil.
